According to statistics from the National Infertility Association, between 35 to 40 percent of infertility problems among couples are caused by male conditions.
Delray Beach acupuncture physician Dr. Susan Schiff agrees with these national statistics. She states, “Our practice treats male factor infertility presentations as frequently as we treat female presentations. Clinically, we do see that 40 percent of fertility challenges are male, 40 percent are female and the other 20 percent are a combination of both.”
Several factors may be responsible for male infertility, including low sperm count, abnormal sperm shape and size (morphology), and reduced motility. Lifestyle, genetics, and physiological changes can also raise or lower male fertility levels, and can significantly affect a man’s ability to produce offspring.
Evidence suggests that acupuncture can have an effect on sperm production and quality, without causing any changes in behavior or sexual desire. A recent trial published in Fertility and Sterility has shown just how effective acupuncture can be in the treatment of this condition, leading to significant increases in the number of normal sperm and equally significant reductions in structural defects.
Dr. Schiff concludes, “There is a lot of research outside of the United States that supports the benefits of acupuncture, Chinese herbs and their influence on improving sperm issues. The recent research deemed ‘significant’ by the Western medical community is old news made new!”
